SWRK 336 - COUNSELING FOR SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS I
This course serves as an introduction to the field of substance abuse counseling and is designed to familiarize the student to the basics of counseling as applied to substance use disorders. It is the first of the two counseling courses for the Substance Use Disorders Minor and it provides a foundation, and is a prerequisite for the second course, Counseling Substance Abuse II. Counseling Substance Abuse I will introduce students to the basic counseling skills, such as paraphrasing and probing, as well as other important aspects of substance abuse counseling. Students will learn theories relevant to substance abuse counseling and how to apply them to their practice. Also covered is screening for substance use disorders, assessment, and individualized treatment planning. Furthermore, the importance of culture differences and how they influence substance abuse treatment will be discussed.
