An opportunity to develop a personal physical fitness program to improve one's strength level, cardiovascular system, and flexibility. COND 102 - SWIMMING FOR FITNESS
This course is for recreational swimmers who want to improve their cardiovascular fitness using the water as their exercise equipment. Students will work on their own short and long term goals with respect to fitness levels and stroke production. Some instruction will be given, as needed, on the five basic strokes (front and back crawl, side, breast, and elementary back stroke). Diving and turns may also be included. Recommended prerequisite: students should be able to swim, non-stop, four lengths of the pool using any stroke. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

COND 103 - PILATES BODY
The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed over 90 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. It strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind, and creates a more streamlined shape. We now realize that while exercise should be an important part of our lives, it should add to and not take away from our enjoyment of a full life. The Pilates mat work teaches us that the body is the finest and only tool necessary for achieving physical fitness. The Pilates philosophy focuses on training the mind and body to work together toward the goal of overall fitness. Our goal is to have the mat work become one seamless movement from the first exercise to the last. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

COND 110 - BEGIN SWIMMING
A course in swimming and basic water safety skills and knowledge which will enable the student to be reasonably safe while in, on, or about the water. Psychological barriers will be attached on an individual basis for students possessing preconceived fears of water. Individualized programs will be developed for class members as they progress according to their ability. The first part of the course comprises the American National Red Cross beginners' course. This course uses the PADI method of diving instruction based on progressive training in the classroom and pool. The course will employ the concept of mastery learning based on student-centered objectives. The curriculum is performance-based, rather than time-based. A challenging 50-minute music-driven cardiovascular workout on a stationary bike. Gain strength and endurance in both mind and body while pursuig your fitness goals. This stationary cycling class utilizes various training techniques and motivational strategies to simulate actual riding experiences such as slow climbs, short sprints and recovery spins for a time-efficient, high calorie burning cardio workout. COND 117 - FIRST AID AND CPR
Standard First Aid gives you the background and skills to handle more emergency situations. Class will use demonstrations and practice sessions and stress accident prevention and injury control. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) is SERIOUS BUSINESS. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, immediate aid is essential. A traditional approach to CPR, students will learn mouth-to-mouth, and emergency obstructed airway procedures, how a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of heart attack, and the early warning signs of a heart attack. Lectures, questions and answer periods, demonstrations, and practice with the special CPR manikin. Please note there will be an additional course fee. COND 118 - BASIC TAI CHI CHUAN
One major goal of the internal martial arts is to free blockages in the body/soul/spirit. This gives many benefits including more efficient and effective (powerful) movement, better health, and a sharper mind. In this course the student learns and practices solo and two person exercises from the Chen style old large frame system of Tai Chi Chuan. Chen style is a rigorous system suitable for young adults and is the original Tai Chi Chuan from which all of the others developed. Theory and history of the art are also covered. A two-part class featuring a step workout followed by muscle conditioning to shape and define the body. COND 122 - AIKDO PRACTICE AND PHILOSOPHY
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art, which focuses on blending or going with an attack. Aikido emphasizes harmony in movement. The course will also focuses on finding resolution in conflict, through the blending of apparent opposites. Using spiral motion with a stable center to create force, it evokes connectedness, gracefulness, and wisdom. We will explore the physical and philosophical aspects of this unique martial art through actual practice, weapons training and discussion. COND 127 - AEROBICS
Aerobic exercise can be defined as a variety of activities which create an increased demand for oxygen over an extended period of time. Aerobic exercises train the cardiovascular and respiratory systems to exchange and deliver oxygen quickly and efficiently to every part of the body being exercised. As the heart muscle becomes stronger and more efficient, a larger volume of blood is able to be pumped with each stroke and with fewer strokes, thus facilitating the rapid transport of oxygen to all parts of the body with less stress on the heart. An aerobically fit cardiovascular system will allow an individual to work longer at a more vigorous pace and with quicker recovery. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a cutting edge martial art developed from traditional Jiu-Jitsu by the Gracie family of Brazil. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was specifically designed to allow a smaller person defeat a larger person by sophisticated application of leverage and technique. Gaining superior position on your opponent and applying chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations becomes the foundation for the effective martial art. Experiences in the execution of movements and the acquisition competence in a wide variety of dances commonly practiced in social settings. The emphasis is on rhythm, technique, and dance recognition by music. This class combines carefully selected movements and concepts from Yoga, Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Jazz, Modern Dance and other movement forms. Nia classes offer total body cardiovascular conditioning and cross-training for any sport or activity. All Nia movements are adaptable and can be personalized for any level of fitness and agility. Ai Chi is an ancient Japanese system of gentle exercise, breathing, and meditation that is practiced in the water. Aqua aerobics are exercise movements performed in the pool with music that comprises a physical conditioning program. Exercising with water resistance allows for fast and safe conditioning while utilizing total range of motion for all joints. COND 157 - KARATE/KUNG FU/SELF DEFENSE
Historically and traditionally, the great martial arts of the world were concerned with the development of the spirit, mind, and body. In the True Spirit Forms style, a student is taught to develop the spirit and encouraged in love, peace, humility, courage, compassion, prudence, and courtesy. The meditative and physical aspects of the style are demanding, and the student is constantly trained to concentrate and focus; as a result, acumen and willpower are improved. The combative aspects of the training will be difficult, but when faced and confronted, bring the student manifold psychological benefits. The student's health and stamina are improved via the yoga-type stretching exercises, stances, proper breathing, and various Karate/Kung Fu techniques and forms which comprise the True Spirit Forms style. Strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, posture, and poise are also improved. Finally, as a result of the training, a student will know how to defend himself/herself if necessary, which will enhance confidence, self-esteem, positive thinking, and courage. COND 158 - CARDIO JAZZ DANCE
The cardio jazz class introduces the basic techniques and vocabulary of jazz dance. The class begins with a warm-up consisting of exercises and isolation designed to prepare the dancer for the cardio workout which follows. Across the floor sequences incorporate various dance phrases as well as isolations from the warm-up. The latter part of the class focuses on a center combination using contemporary music. A cool down completes the session. While increasing the heart rate, our goal is training the mind and body to work together while acquiring poise and grace through dance. Variety of rhythmic exercise selections in the buoyancy of deep water. Course designed to maximize resistance benefits, improve cardiovascular endurance, and all muscle groups in the water with no joint stress or muscle pain. Promotes calorie and fat burning. COND 160 - GOLF
(This course is a half-semester course and will meet for the second half of the semester in the spring; and the first half of the semester in the Fall.) This course is an introduction to the game of golf. The course is a combination of learning swing fundamentals, short game fundamentals, and the rules and etiquette of the game. The swing fundamentals include the stance, grip, posture, and full swing dynamics. The short game includes putting, chipping, pitching and bunker shots. The rules of the game include nine of the most important rules and etiquette rules of golf. This course will include driving range, golf course and classroom instruction. It is required for you to bring clubs to the course. The following clubs are the minimum you must bring: A wood, 7 iron, pitching wedge, sand wedge and putter. The course will be held primarily at The Darlington Golf Center in Mahwah. Please note there be an additional course fee. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

COND 210 - SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
You must be a strong swimmer to take this course. It will increase the student's endurance, strength, and flexibility in the water, as well as teach the skills, figures, and techniques of synchro. Students must be able to swim four pool lengths each of the crawl stroke, breast stroke, side stroke, and back crawl stroke. They must also swim one half length of the pool underwater. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

COND 215 - SWIMMING II
This course will work on improving the front crawl stroke as well as teach the elementary back, breast, side and back crawl strokes. Emphasis will be placed on increasing stamina and the skill level of each stroke. Safety issues will be addressed and practiced as well as beginning diving techniques. Students will be expected to enter and swim in deep water. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

COND 220 - LIFE GUARDING
This is an intensive course requiring strong swimming skills. A pre-course swimming test will be given on the first day. The test consists of a 500 yard NON-STOP swim using both the crawl and breast strokes with rhythmic breathing and a 20 yard swim to retrieve a 10 pound weight in deep water and return it to the starting point, keeping both hands on the weight and the weight at the surface of the water. American Red Cross certification in PROFESSIONAL CPR and FRIST AID as well as the LIFEGUARD certification will be awarded to students successfully passing all the Red Cross requirements. Students can opt to enroll for a college grade without expecting certification. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

COND 221 - PROFESSIONAL CPR
This course is designed for the professional rescuer e.g. paramedic, EMT, lifeguards, nurses and nursing students. Participants will learn how to respond to emergency situation involving adult, child and infant victims. Skills include rescue breathing, conscious/unconscious choking, as well as one-and-two-person CPR. Rescuers will learn how to use a pocket mask, bag valve mask and alternative methods for opening the airway of victims with possible head or spinal injuries. All skills will be performed using manikins. Books, pocket masks and protective gloves will be provided. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.

Continuation of Tennis I with emphasis on placement of shots and advanced Singles and Doubles strategy. Half volley, Lob and Second Serve options will be covered. COND 260 - GOLF II
(This course is a half-semester course and will meet for the second half of the semester in the Spring; and the first half of the semester in the Fall.) In this course we will continue learning about the swing dynamics. Each student will have their swings videotaped for discussion and analysis. Our class will alternate among the Darlington Golf Center Driving Range and Golf Course, and the classroom. Our driving range experience will concentrate on the swing, the use and practice of the driver, fairway woods, middle irons and short irons. The golf course includes the practice putting greens where we will be learning and practicing putting, chipping and pitching. We will be utilizing the classroom for analyzing each student's swing and review the rules of etiquette of the game. It is required to bring clubs to this course. Please note there will be an additional course fee. This course is not eligible for a letter grade--Pass/Fail grading only.
