ITAL 101 - FOUNDATIONS I - ITALIAN
This course is designed to foster creativity and encourage the use of Italian in meaningful, everyday situations while promoting cultural awareness and appreciation. The course is based on ACTFL oral proficiency guidelines with a functional methodology, allowing for the immediate integration of newly learned vocabulary into real-life role-playing. Its primary goal is to emphasize the use of language rather than an abstract knowledge of it. A reality based communication approach will provide the students with the skills to express themselves, both in speech and in writing, at the novice/low/id-level and will prepare the students with a panorama of Italian culture, from its classical roots to its most contemporary expressions. ln class, listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities will be used to enhance the grasp of vocabulary and to provide opportunities to express ideas in Italian. Students will be constantly encouraged to focus on the goal of reaching communicative competence while striving toward grammatical accuracy. The text is supported by audio and online material (provided by the instructor via Moodle). Students will be able to carry out activities, do and check their homework, and study and receive some of the lessons through a computer.

ITAL 102 - FOUNDATIONS II - ITALIAN
This course is a continuation of Foundations l. ITAL 201 - INTERMEDIATE I - ITALIAN
This course integrates communicative aspects in all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. In addition, the basic tenants of standards for world language learning (communication, cultures, connections and viewpoints, cultural and linguistic expressions) are embedded in activities and readings done in class. The course is designed to gain fluency through various conversational topics and short compositions. Our goal will be to establish effective communication and reinforce grammatical skills. Discussions on a variety of cultural topics will improve students’ ability to communicate effectively in various situations created in the classroom. The aim is to reach an Intermediate low/mid-level acquisition (ACTFL scale). The class will combine interactive methodologies and technological advances to create an exciting setting that supports a more realistic and functional approach to the Italian language studies.

This course is the continuation oflntermediate l. It aims to further develop communicative proficiency on the target language and culture by reinforcing the five skills of speaking, listening reading, writing and cultural competency in the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes established in Intermediate l. This course is designed to gain fluency in Italian through various conversational topics and short compositions. Grammar points covered in previous courses will be used in the development of spontaneous expression in the target language through a combination of written and oral practice. This course aims to establish the basics of effective communication and reinforce grammatical and lexical skills. Discussions on a variety of cultural and social topics will improve students’ ability to communicate orally in various situations with fluency and ease, while at the same time enhancing comprehension and writing skills.

This course aims to introduce students to the most important and significant events, trends, and movements in modern and contemporary Italian culture through the study of history. art, literature, film, and music. By considering different cultural and historical texts and essays, together with the analysis of numerous literary, musical, visual and written works, the course will highlight crucial junctures from Risorgimento and the foundation of the Kingdom of Italy through the rise of Neorealism in post-World War II Italy, to the ‘9Os and beyond.
