| FREN 101 - FOUNDATIONS - FRENCH I |

FORMERLY LANG-101 - This course is the first-half of a one-year sequence, and is designed for students with no prior knowledge of the language. Students will practice using the language in various contexts likely to be encountered in real-life situations. Thematic and cultural contexts include daily social encounters, routine activities, survival needs, and handling school related situations. Students will receive intensive in-class practice with the language, supplemented with daily work outside of class on individual assignments and small group activities that emphasize communication. Audio-visual materials will be used to enhance language learning. Attendance at the Language Laboratory is required. Lab Fee.

| FREN 102 - FOUNDATIONS - FRENCH II |

FORMERLY LANG-102 - This course is the second-half of a one-year sequence in beginning French. Students will build on the skills acquired in Foundations I to further develop their communicative and cultural competence. New thematic and cultural contexts will include friendship and love relationships, nature and the environment, housing, and traveling. Students will receive intensive in-class practice with the language, supplemented with daily work outside of class on individual assignments and small group activities that emphasize communication. Audio-visual materials will be used to enhance language learning. Attendance at the Language Laboratory is required. Lab Fee.

FORMERLY LANG-201 - This course offers an intensive review of the basic structures of the French language while introducing students to the study of more complex structures, functions, and vocabulary. Activities have been designed to develop and practice a variety of skills students can apply to real life situations. Instructors use a repertoire of strategies to help students expand their communicative and cultural competence. This is the first semester of a one-year sequence in Intermediate French. Lab Fee.

| FREN 301 - FRENCH CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION |

FORMERLY LANG-305: This course is designed to develop students' conversation and writing skills in French. Students learn first to analyze the structure and style of diverse literary, journalistic, and informal texts of the French-speaking world. These texts exemplify different genres or writing functions and provide high-quality models of prose that students are to imitate in their own written assignments. Written expression is improved as students grow more at ease with a variety of writing tasks. For the conversation part of this course, short reading selections from current French publications organized into a variety of topics encourage students to react, to talk and to exchange ideas, in short to practice and improve their conversational skills as they advance in their study of French. FORMERLY LANG-303: An overview of contemporary France through the study of the social, political, economic, intellectual and artistic manifestations of French culture today that will raise awareness of intercultural perspectives. The topics covered are: lifestyles in contemporary France, the concept of the State as it influences the social, educational and working environments of different groups within contemporary French society, the structure of the government and its evolutions and "revolutions," the economy of contemporary France, the fourth leading economic power in the world, the cultural and artistic life and French attitudes toward culture and, finally, issues and concerns that affect cultural and ethnic minorities within France today.

FORMERLY LANG-407: This course, entirely conducted in French, introduces students to selected readings of fiction, poetry and theatre from the 18th to the 20th century. Students explore major literary movements in their historical context and study their representative works. Furthermore, students practice a "close-reading" of literary texts and learn to write critically.
