This course is an introduction to gender-based violence, which includes violence against women, violence against trans and gender non-conforming people, and other types of violence that is entwined with gender. Using concepts from feminist and queer theory, we will take a historical, sychological, social, political, and legal approach to understanding the factors that contribute to gender-based violence. The course will also examine contextual factors at local, national, and global levels, particularly by examining how gender-based violence intersects with other systems of oppression, such as race, class, sexuality, social class, ability, age, and nation. ln addition, students will learn about social movements to prevent and provide support and advocacy for gender-based violence, which includes learning about local resources.
