MUSI 615 - CROSS CULTURAL MUSIC THEORY & COMPOSITION
In this course students will develop and advance their vocabularies and technique for music composition using a broad, cross-cultural approach to creativity. The class includes analysis of late 20th century and current compositional styles and methods along with selected non-Western musical theories and practices. Music cognition studies are incorporated along with more traditional music theory, helping students synthesize strategies that span composition, improvisation, popular and art music genres and styles. Creative projects are used in parallel with analysis to facilitate the incorporation of advanced techniques into the students’ compositional palette. Each week will include ear training, sight singing, and musical analysis assignments relevant to the topic being discussed.
