| MUSI 610 - ELECTROACOUSTIC COMPOSITION |

This course organizes the compositional process into four overlapping areas: sound collection, preparatory sound processing and manipulation, structural organization, and presentation. Through the detailed exploration of these activities within a number of contexts, including beats, "breath", the soundscape, digital and analog synthesis, data sonification, algorithmic composition and spectral analysis, students will develop a personalized compositional practice. At each stage students will be encouraged to apply their unique creative ideas to solving the problem at hand. Students will share their experiences in regular discussions in which class work will be constructively critiqued. The connection between performance practice, including improvisation, and computer interaction will be emphasized, reinforcing the physicality of music making, even within the "disembodied" and mediated environment of electronics and software. Readings will be divided evenly into the two general headings of theory and practice, leading students towards both a conceptual framework for their work and a solid individualized technique. The class will also include listening sessions, with analysis, of works from the early days of electroacoustic composition up to the present, and of scores where available.
