LITR 340 - PEACEWEAVERS, WARRIORS & WITCHES: WOMEN IN BRITISH MEDIEVAL LITERATURE |
This course surveys the earliest literature of England, with some texts read in translation and some in the original language. In it, we will examine some canonical texts but in a somewhat atypical fashion, by focusing on the women featured (or not featured) in the texts we encounter. We will begin by considering women’s place in the culture and society of early medieval England, examining the role women play in the warrior ethos. As we enter the Middle English period, we will examine how the position of women shifts as the makeup of society changes, and notions of Chivalry and Courtly Love come to the forefront as the concept of the comitatus gives way. Please note that some of the earliest works will be read in translation, but the majority of the later material will be read in the original Middle English
