CHIN 102 - FOUNDATIONS - CHINESE II |
Chinese Language Course II is the second part of a yearlong pursuit. Students will build on the language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) needed to communicate at a basic level with native speakers. The emphasis throughout the semester will be on the active use of the target language. Simple audio-oral communication is practiced with essential vocabulary.
Listening, speaking and reading are developed concurrently at an easy level with an emphasis on audio-oral skills. Topics in this course are common themes in everyday life of Chinese-speaking people and include greetings, family, dates and time, hobbies, visiting friends, making appointments, studying Chinese, school life, shopping, and transportation. These themes will be presented, discussed and practiced in authentic communicative contexts through readings, video clips, class discussions, and online activities that enrich students’ vocabulary as well as their understanding of the culture and society. The class will be conducted mostly in Chinese so as to offer students enough target language input in an immersive environment. Therefore, students are expected to be active learners of the language. Grammar explanations will be presented as needed in meaningful contexts. An additional key pan of this course is to nurture students’ cultural competence through presenting and discussing essential aspects of Chinese culture relevant to topics of this course.
