TOPICS: ESSENTIALS OF PUBLIC HEALTH: This course introduces undergraduate students to a broad range of topics related to public health including public health history, public health policy, social and behavioral health, global and environmental health, and analysis of health data. Special attention will be given to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Students will build essential skills and competencies on quantitative reasoning, comprehension of scientific literacy, critical thinking, and teamwork. (Note: This course will be offered with pass/fail grading only.)
TOPICS: CURRENT TOPICS IN LIFE SCIENCES: This is a seminar course, in which students will enhance their awareness of the current developments in life sciences and their research trends. Students will be taught to identify authentic sources of life science news, comprehend, and critically evaluate them. The class meetings will consist of student presentations of pre-assigned research news articles, based on original research, published within the last six months. Coverage of COVID-19 related articles will be emphasized. The class is not only about presentations. The purpose of presentation is, in fact, to initiate scientific discussions. Copies of the article to be presented will be distributed among the students ahead of time so that everyone can read the article and come prepared for active discussion in the class meetings. Open discussions during and after the presentation will be highly encouraged and anticipated. There will be a strict attendance policy to ensure semester long participation. This course is offered as a pass/fail option.
