PHYS 440 - ELECTRONIC, MAGNETIC & OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
This is a 4-credit, lecture-based course. The course covers the energy band structure of materials, the mechanism of electrical and thermal conductivity in materials with emphasis on electronic and transport properties of conduction electrons in metals,:magnetism and magnetic order, as well as optical properties and optical excitations in solids. Special topics that will be touched upon include superconductivity, localized and itinerant magnetism, correlated metals, plasmons and plasmonic materials. The topics will be discussed conceptually and theoretically first, then will be directly linked to reports from research journals. Examples include analysis of measurements of heat capacity, thermal conductivity or resistivity versus temperature in various materials, broadband optical reflectance data on materials, magnetic moment with temperature and magnetic field in various magnetic systems, and quantum oscillations in high magnetic field. The experimental techniques employed to measure various properties of materials will be discussed as well.
