MUSI 330 - ICONS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
This course focuses on a selection of highly influential composers and compositions in the Western Classical tradition and the ways in which this iconic music, more or less universally, affects human emotion. Landmark works by Bingen, Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Verdi, Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Berg, Holst, Copland and Stravinsky are explored in their cultural contexts. The course is organized by topical themes and considers the musical works and lives of composers from a multi- dimensional viewpoint. Music's relationship with art, dance, drama, religion, economics, politics, and sociocultural issues is considered. The musical repertoire is selected to augment the content of MUSI-255 [Music, History and Culture]. Some composers are discussed in both courses but this course focuses on deeper music listening and analysis. Students may need to travel off-campus in order to attend music concerts; a wide variety of affordable opportunities will be available.
