In Greek Drama: Global Settings & Perspectives, students discover or re-discover Classical Greek plays that have influenced the development of Western Theatre and gain familiarity with the three major Greek tragedians, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides by reading representative works of each. As students understand the tradition and become familiar with the dramatic style of Greek tragedy, they also read modern adaptations of the original Greek plays produced by 20" century dramatists such as, Sartre, Yourcenar, Cixous, Anouilh, Cocteau and Soyinka. In addition to Aristotle's poetics, a classical text, students read contemporary theoretical texts by Foucault, Butler, Cixous, lrigaray, Kristeva and others. In short the objective of the course is not only to demonstrate the Greek influence on Western drama but also to study feminist criticism of Greek Drama and the appropriation of Greek plays and characters by postcolonial writers who question and deconstruct this colonial model and its binaries
