IBUS 336 - DOING BUSINESS IN AFRICA
This course will introduce students to the unique aspects of doing business in Africa. The African continent has been largely ignored by international business for far too long, yet there is a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, leading to the creation of not only small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), but also to the development and growth of many pan-regional and global multinational enterprises (MNEs). As might be expected, there is not any one business environment in Africa. A continent that is comprised of 54 nations is bound to differ markedly in their political, legal and economic environments. As a result, this course will focus on several key markets in Africa, e,g. South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, etc., while also aiming to cover smaller countries such as Ghana, Rwanda and Zambia that have experienced their own transformations over the past decade. The political economy and the strength of the institutions in African markets will be reviewed.
