The descriptions and topics of this course change from semester-to-semester, as well as from instructor-to-instructor. Prerequisite: varies with the topic offered.
THEA 390 THEATER AND HUMAN RIGHTS. An interdisciplinary course using the craft of acting to explore issues of human rights. This course will look at both sides of an atrocity, victim and perpetrator, to analyze more precisely how human beings find the resources to survive, or are capable of committing, such acts. The student-actors will, as a part of their character preparation, be asked to write research papers and to give oral reports to the class on the specific historical,social and political context that surround selected world events. The human impact of these events will be deeply explored using acting techniques. Through this course students will gain a broader understanding of conflict on the world's stages, and an intimate understanding of the condition of human suffering under extreme circumstances.
THEA 390 THEATER PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY. Using QLab, DMX, MIDI, AND iOS interfaces (among others), this course will explore new and existing technologies used in theatrical production. Experiential work will consist of solo and collabotrative projects.
THEA 390 ADVANCED STAGECRAFT. This course is a continuation of THEA 227 Stagecraft Lecture and Lab with an emphasis on autocad and techniques of technical direction.
THEA 390 STAGE COMBAT: This is an introductory course into the thrilling art of theatrical combat, centered around the two most fundamental forms: swordplay and unarmed. In addition to discovering the basic techniques to perform safe and believable fights — including falls — students will explore the creative processes of fight design and choreography. Experience in this unique movement discipline is as valuable to performers as it is to stage managers, directors and choreographers.
THEA 390 DEVISED THEATER emerges from collaborative processes "devised" by artists from all disciplines - theater, dance, music, visual art, sound design, spoken word, etc. Through a process of experimentation, exploration and creative play, using a variety of techniques and stimuli, new and surprising performance work appears. In the Devised Theater course, students from all backgrounds and levels of experience will create original performance material that sheds light on important issues and encourages community building. The Devised Theater course exposes students to innovative techniques, theories and practices. It is open and accessible to all students who would like to experience this collective and non-hierarchical form of theater-making. In addition to studio work, students will have opportunities to attend devised performances in NYC and to learn from guest artists. The course will culminate in a work-in-progress performance open to the public.
