| SWRK 230 - AIDS: SOCIAL PERSPECTIVES |
|
(FORMERLY SWRK-330): This course will provide the opportunity to learn the most current global information available about the cultural and bio-psycho-social aspects of HIV/AIDS. Students will explore personal and societal values, and develop an understanding of the impact of culture on the social issues and roles ofthose who are HIV infected as Well as their family members. Students will expand their ethnocentric understanding about HIV/AIDS to a more culturally and diverse perspective by researching, presenting, and learning about the unique beliefsystems and challenges experienced by populations in a wide range of countries. These include studying about indigenous local healers in comparison with current medical treatment options. Students will become more informed citizens ofthe world by developing critical thinking skills with which to understand that the norms they take for granted are similar or vastly different to those of other countries outside ofthe United States in relation to HIV/AIDS. Students will do extensive research about domestic and international HIV/AIDS issues and integrate their learning using PowerPoint presentations in a professional manner. In addition, students will view global YouI‘ube.com HIV/AIDS Public Service
Announcements and then create their own regarding U.S HIV/AIDS prevention.
