| NURS 365 - PUBLIC HEALTH IN WEST AFRICA |

The objective of this study course to Ghana, West Africa is to expose students to differences in healthcare environments and the cultural implications for healthcare. This course offers a comprehensive overview of community healthcare in West Africa as well as introduction to African civilization, society, and culture. By the end of the study trip, students will appreciate the impact that politics play on the delivery of healthcare in sub-Sahara Africa. Students will understand how West Africa's economic and political history has shaped its society and current healthcare environment. On return to RCNJ after these experiential learning opportunities students will make on campus presentations to students and faculty groups about their lived experiences. This program is in keeping with Ramapo's mission of international education, intercultural understanding, and experiential learning opportunities. On return from this trip, students will be able to: (1) Draw comparisons between their own culture and that of West Africans; (2) Analyze the health needs in the population of West Africa; (3) Differentiate between the health care systems in the US and West Africa; (4) Identify the role of the nurse/health care worker within the health system of West Africa; and (5) Compare and contrast community healthcare practices between their own environments and that of West Africa.
