LANG 270 - SECOND LANGUAGE PEDAGOGY
Second Language Pedagogy will introduce you to the most current approaches to teaching world languages. The most recent methodologies have focused on how to teach language, mindful of the socio-cultural environment, in meaningful contexts for real-world communication. We will cover such areas as the historical development of second-language acquisition theories and teaching methodology, proficiency guidelines and their implications for the classroom, language policy, language ecology and sustainability and advocacy, diversity and inclusion, and strategies for teaching communicative and intercultural competence. We will examine the significance of linguistic diversity for a sustainable future, specifically focusing on the language as a tool for transmitting specialized knowledge, symbols and worldviews of local environments. We will explore assessment tools and technology in the classroom. The course aims to familiarize you with professional organizations, congresses, and journals in the field of second language teaching, and foster a self-reflective, critical attitude toward teaching. The national and state standards and their implementation in the world language classroom are infused throughout the course. Second Language Pedagogy fulfills a requirement toward the New Jersey state licensure to teach world languages.
