The description and topics of this course change from semester-to-semester, as well as from instructor-to-instructor. Prerequisites: varies with the topic offered. This course is designed to discuss a variety of current topics in the science of bioinformatics. In general, students of this course will learn about representation, analysis and application of biological, molecular and biochemical information from computational point of view.
The Spring 2012 topic: BIIN 490 BIOINFORMATICS LECTURE AND LAB. The Bioinformatics course provides hands-on introduction to this emerging technological science for students of bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry, health sciences, computer science and other related fields. Students will be introduced to various computational methods for solving problems in genome and protein analysis. Some of the topics to be covered in the lectures include: Fundamentals of Gene Structure and Function, Database Searches, Molecular Sequence Analysis, Genomics, Gene Identification, Proteomics and Structure-Function Predictions. An end-of-semester research project is part of the course requirements. This course consists of lecture and laboratory combined. No programming skills required. However, prior exposure to personal computers, e-mail, and the Internet is essential.
