Spring 2021
TOPICS: Experimental Animation
DESCRIPTION: Experimental animation is a subgenre of cartoons. Experimental animation films have no narrative or specific structure. Experimental animation is subjective, non-linear, and often deals with philosophical and spiritual concerns. The course will provide a historical and theoretical context through films, texts, and discussions. Students will create short projects that explore ways of using traditional tools and apps without telling stories or following conventional methods and procedures. They will be encouraged to combine live action and animation; claymation and stop motion in painterly, non-representational ways; and a creative final project that adheres to the abstract principles that define this kind of animation.
