This course will explore the history and culture of Latin America from the pre-Columbian period to the 19th century, focusing on Native American civilizations, European settlement, colonial development, slavery, independence movements, nationalism, economic forces, militarism, religious and ethnic identity, and other themes. We will also consider social, cultural, and economic interactions among indigenous peoples (especially Andean, Mayan, and Aztec), Spanish and Portuguese settlers, and Africans (also creoles). In our course we will consider
how gender, class, race, language, art, literature, and other social and intercultural forces helped shape this enormous and extremely diverse region.
