SPAN 303 - THE ART OF READING IN SPANISH |
This course provides an opportunity to expand your linguistic and cultural
competency by exploring exciting works of literature in Spanish. ln order to discuss literary selections we will use vocabulary and concepts pertaining to the field, such as personaje (character), género (genre), cuenlo (short story), tema (theme), tmma or argumenlo (plot), etc... Applied or thematic courses like this
can lead to incredible acquisition oflanguage and increased proficiency in all the skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening and cultural competence. Mastery of any language requires continuous practice and attention to linguistic detail. Because literature potentially touches all aspects ofthe human experience, it
will expand your vocabulary more than you can imagine if you really engage with the readings. Literature also carries rich cultural material that will help lead to deeper understanding and cultural competence (how well one can negotiate diverse cultural contexts). ln order to be able to engage with others authentically, we must understand the dynamics ofpower and privilege and identify and move
beyond ethnocentric views we receive from our culture. Thus, we will emphasize the communities and historical periods in which these literary texts are produced.
