POLI 208 - SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM |
This course traces the history ofSocialism and Communism, as intellectual movements in the early 19th century, to major political forces in the late 19th century. It explores the creation of Socialist and Communist parties, their influence on European and American politics, and their role in the major events of the 19-20th centuries. lt will study the creation ofCommunist states, differentiating between those that collapsed and those that evolved away from their original ideals. It will examine the development of democratic Socialism in modern European democracies. Finally, it will explore the meaning ofSocialism in American politics today. This course is cross-listed with HIST-208.
