MUSI 203 - MUSIC IN LATIN AMERICA
This course explores a selection of musical traditions from Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba, paying additional attention to their presence, transformation, and reception in the United States. (The regions and genres may vary by semester.) In addition to introducing a range of musical systems, performance settings, and cultural meanings, the course connects musical expressions of the past and present to issues of race/ethnicity, class, gender, religion, economics, nationalism, and migration. Students will read about and learn to play the music and also conduct ethnomusicological reasearch in local communities. Students willhave opportunities to research live music off campus, although leaving campus is not required.
