SOCI 390 INTELLIGENCE-LED POLICING. This course is designed as an introduction to the intelligence-led policing model, concepts, associated theories and issues. The course will examine criminological theories, modern techniques that integrate best practices of problem oriented policing with law enforcement intelligence and crime analysis. The course will include collection of data, mapping and analysis of the data, along with various strategies in response to identified problems. Case studies and practical applications will be utilized to illustrate principles included in the course.
SOCI 390 SOCIOLOGY OF POLICING. This course explores the various structural and cultural factors that affect police work. Officers' relationships and interactions with the people whom they police and with their fellow officers are investigated in both micro-level and macro-level contexts. In examining officers' relationships and interactions with those whom they police, special attention is given to the structure of communities that officers patrol. In particular, students analyze how the demographics/ constituencies, size, residential/commercial make-up, and identified problems of communities shape the ways in which officers navigate these communities. Students also examine how officers' police work is shaped by the subcultures and organizational structures in which they are enmeshed.
