LITR 290 - TOPICS: |
The descriptions and topics of this course change from semester-to-semester, as well as from instructor-to-instructor. Prerequisite: varies with the topic offered.
This course will examine the genre of contemporary Young Adult literature. We will read five works in different categories of YA fiction, including dystopian, fantasy, realistic, graphic novel, and historical. Through group presentations and discussion, we will also consider a range of other literature written in this field, learn relevant terms and categories, and examine different ways of reading this subgenre. Although many nineteenth and early twentieth century novels are now considered “Young Adult,” such as Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, the field blossomed during World War II when teenagers came to be considered a distinct demographic. The genre is currently in what is considered its second “golden age,” with YA literature garnering a wide audience beyond its traditional 11-18 year olds and crossing heavily over into adult readership. A selection of critical essays will enhance our understanding of this literature.
