An historical analysis of the peoples and cultures of Southern Africa.
Beginning with an archaeological survey, the course will focus on a number of
pre-20th century topics which explore issues that directly and indirectly set
the scene for the turbulent 1900s: from the founding of the Union of South
Africa to the struggles and ultimate triumph with the first-ever multi-racial
elections of April 1994. The reading list includes works by Bishop Desmond
Tutu and Nelson Mandela. Documentaries and slide shows will be shown and
guest lecturers invited.
