Crime and Media guides students in an investigation of crime's relationship with media. A sociological perspective is utilized to examine how media shape our perceptions of crime, criminal behavior, deviance, and law enforcement. A variety of macro- and micro-media theories, ranging from structural views of media as a social institution, to how media content affects individuals' perceptions and attitudes, will be applied to relevant case studies. Special attention will be paid to how media content portrays and reinforces stereotypical views of gender, race, class, and other social locations. Media's relationship with constructing images of law enforcement, the legal system, and corrections will also be covered. Methodological issues in the study of media industries and content are examined.
