A selective survey of various types of music that together represent the social, cultural, and technological discourse of modern and post-modern musical sound. Beginning with North American popular music, the scope of this course expands to include world music, avant garde, subcultural and electronic musics. The course also examines the impacts of technology, multimedia and contemporary social, cultural and political movements on the changing nature of musical experience.
