ENSC 110 - FOSSILS TO FORESTS:FIELD STUDIES IN CHANGING LANDSCAPES
This course combines field observations, lectures and research projects to investigate the ecology, paleontology, and physical landscape (geomorphology) or New Jersey and surrounding areas. The principle theme of the course is the dynamic nature of ecological and geological systems. Specific topics include: ecological succession, forest health, dynamics, biodiversity and restoration, history of life, fossil identification, paleo-ecosystem reconstruction, and climate change. There will be field excursions to High Point State Park, NJ (high-elevation bog), Hickory Run State Park, PS (glacial boulder field), Catskill Mountain region (ecological gradients, landforms, and 300 million year old ocean fossils), the Pine Barrens (pigmy pine plains, fire ecology), Barnegat coastline (dune succession and ecology, coastal processes), and fossil sites in Stroudsburg, PA and Montague NJ (390 million year old ocean life), and Sewell, NJ (65 million year ocean life). Field labs at the nearby Ramapo Valley County Reservation give hands-on experience at conducting field research about forest ecology and developing skills that focus on authentic research tasks.
