EDUC 360 - INTRODUCTION TO SPECIAL EDUCATION
This course provides preservice teachers with an introduction to the current knowledge and understanding of children and adolescents with special needs. Content includes the following: history, legislation, etiology, characteristics, needs, impact on families, and existing and emerging technologies. The focus will be on assessment, support services, and effective pedagogical strategies for helping students with a wide spectrum of special needs, including gifted and talented, reach their optimum level of achievement in the least restrictive school settings. This course addresses the following New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers (NJPST): (A) Standard 2 Human Growth and Development; (B) Standard 3 Diverse Learners; (C) Standard 5 Assessment; (D) Standard 7 Special Needs; (E) Standard 9 Collaboration and Partnerships; and (F) Standard 10 Professional Development.
