CHEM 310 - ELEMENTS OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY
Physical Chemistry is the branch of chemistry that establishes and develops the principles of chemistry in terms of the underlying concepts of physics and the language of mathematics. This course will cover the following sub-divisions in physical chemistry: Thermodynamics: the study of transformations of energy, especially heat and work. Kinetics: the study of the rates of chemical reactions; how rapidly reactants are consumed and products formed and the variables that affect them. Quantum Chemistry: using the Schrodinger Equation to understand the properties of matter at the level of atoms and molecules, where Newtonian mechanics will not work. Spectroscopy: the study of the interaction of light and matter to measure atomic and molecular properties. This course is designed to provide students with a foundation in the essential aspects of physical chemistry and a thorough preparation to take the Praxis examination for teaching secondary school chemistry. This course is not recommended for chemistry or biochemistry majors.
