ARHT 490 ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS IN ART HISTORY. In this seminar-format class students will pursue a topic of their choice in the field of art history in depth and design their own culminating project, whether it be in the form of a written paper, a series of works of art, or another format. In the first third of the semester, we will study research methods, and approaches to the history of art, while developing individual project plans and goals. In the remaining time, students will develop meaningful projects related to their professional goals, and involving extensive art historical inquiry in a workshop format in which students share their progress and findings each week. Past projects include: researching and designing an exhibition on French Symbolist painters, studying and writing on the controversy surrounding the recent cleaning of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Ceiling, or designing a set of lesson plans on art and religion from around the globe. The course is approriate for ambitious juniors and seniors from any major.
