ARHT 338 - EUROPEAN AVANT- GARDE ART & DESIGN
This course offers a general survey of European visual art during the first half of the 20th century. We will consider major artists and movements within the context of the social, economic and political upheavals of the time period, such as Colonialism, the impact of World War I, the Soviet Revolution, the rise of Fascism and the Spanish Civil War. We will focus on topics such as the social and symbolic meanings of abstraction, the contested ideas of Primitivism and Modernism, and the impact of new technologies, industrial mass production, and two world wars on the making and viewing of art. This is a 4-credit class and will have challenging requirements, including weekly readings that include difficult or challenging texts. The national standard is for a college-level class to have 3 hours of homework for each hour of class time, which would equal 6 hours of outside work per week. The reading and writing assignments for this class will usually require a minimum of 4 hours of outside work and sometimes as many as 6 hours, so please plan your weekly schedule to allow for this.
